Maltese Cross ring or knight jewelry in sterling silver with a heavy shank signet style

Sterling silver signet ring with a Maltese Cross on top. A signet style wax carved and cast in .925 sterling silver The Maltese cross is a Portuguese cross used by Knights of Malta. I have this cross printed on the back of my mind. Being raised in Brasil, I grew up used to see this cross everywhere Portuguese art and architecture was found. I have just been back from a trip to Portugal and was inspired to make a ring with the Maltese cross. I quickly sculpted this ring from memory.

This ring weighs 16. Grams or 0.565 Oz and is US size 7

The Maltese cross is a symbol that is most commonly associated with the Knights of Malta. The shape of the Maltese cross is star-like, with four V-shaped arms that are joined together at the tips. Although the Maltese cross is most famously associated with the Knights of Malta and Malta itself as a country, the symbol originates from Amalfi, an Italian republic during the 11th century.

It is universally agreed that the four arms of the Cross stand for the four Cardinal Virtues – namely, prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude.

The Maltese Cross, formally adopted by the Knights Hospitallers of St. John in 1126, stylistically owes its origins to the crosses used in the crusades, when it was identified as the symbol of the “Christian warrior”: Its eight points denote the eight obligations or aspirations of the knights, namely “to live in truth, have faith, repent one’s sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, be sincere and wholehearted, and to endure persecution.”

With time, the eight points also came to represent the eight “langues” (literally “tongues,” but in effect national groupings) of the noblemen who were admitted to the famed order, namely those of Auvergne, Provence, France, Aragon, Castille and Portugal, Italy, Baviere (Germany), and England (with Scotland and Ireland).
